The benefits of being a member

Hughes Federal Credit Union is a member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperative. We exist to serve our members. Instead of paying stockholders, we return our profits to members through higher savings rates, lower loan rates, interest-earning checking, and fewer and lower fees. Each member votes to elect members of our volunteer board of directors.

The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government, insures your savings for up to $250,000. Hughes has been accredited by the Better Business Bureau with an A+ rating since 1974.

Credit unions were made for the people

The credit union movement began more than 150 years ago in Flammersfeld, Germany, with the simple idea of people pooling their money and lending it to one another. In 1909 credit unions began to open in the United States. Leagues were formed in each state to help credit unions with financial and legal advice, organization and state legislation. The Mountain West Credit Union Association is the regional trade association representing 125 member credit unions and 3.1 million credit union members throughout Arizona, Colorado and Wyoming.

Credit unions in the United States also receive support from the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) and worldwide from the World Council of Credit Unions.

Today, there are credit unions are in 100 countries serving more than 196 million members. Each year, credit unions around the world together celebrate the credit union difference on International Credit Union Day, which is the third Thursday in October.

Hughes Federal Credit Union's Rich History of Service

Hughes Federal Credit Union was formed in 1952 in Tucson to serve the financial needs of Hughes Aircraft Company (now Raytheon Missile Systems Company) employees and their families.

In 2001, the National Credit Union Administration approved Hughes Federal Credit Union to serve the underserved community in Tucson providing membership eligibility to anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in Tucson.
