Credit Union History
The credit union movement began more than 150 years ago in Flammersfeld, Germany. The idea was simple. People could pool their money and lend to one another.
In 1909, credit unions spread to the United States. Leagues were formed in each state to help credit unions with financial and legal advice, organization and state legislation. Arizona's credit union league, which serves all the credit unions in the state of Arizona, is the Arizona Credit Union System in Phoenix, Arizona.
Credit unions in the United States also receive support from the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) and worldwide from the World Council of Credit Unions.
More than 70 million Americans belong to a credit union, and it is estimated that another 40 million people in the U.S. qualify for credit union membership according to current "field of membership" rules. There are currently more than 11,000 credit unions across the country.
Today, there are more than 39,000 credit unions in 84 countries serving more than 120 million members. Each year, credit unions around the world together celebrate the credit union difference on International Credit Union Day, which is the third Thursday in October.
